50-must-watch-clips.jpg

The Daily Telegraph recently collected what its editors believed to be “the best videos on the web,” but being a fan of “the internet” I beg to differ. Yes, the Dramatic Chipmunk is hilarious, but is it the most hilarious clip ever on the (You)Tube? While I likely cannot recall the best clips of all time myself, I would like to present a few that I feel are missing through each of the Telegraph’s categories: comedy, sport, politics, TV and showbiz, and music.

Comedy

1. A Channel 101 original from 2003 “Kicked in the Nuts” offers itself as not only an irreverent look at reality programming…but, a damn fine look at some people getting kicked right straight in the nuts!

2. Like many good things in life, comedy often repeats itself; however many times it does so in ways we cannot ourselves foresee. While you may have gotten a kick out of the first clip, nothing can prepare you for watching a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle reproduce the same comedic gem.

3. The Pain Train’s Comin’ - WOOO WOOO: Terry Tate Office Linebacker!

4. Product plugging & Letterman cracking up: The Top Ten Signs You Weren’t The Most Popular Guy In High School…presented by…Napoleon Dynamite.

5. Before VH1’s Acceptable TV its cast produced another fantastic (and personal favorite) Channel 101 original, Yacht Rock. While the entire 10 episode series was a blast, one of the most hilarious episodes plotted Eddie Van Halen and Michael Jackson against the smooth grooves of Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins (…and Toto).

Sport

1. One time OHL star Rob Hisey scored one of the most amazing goals the sport of hockey had ever seen back in 2006.

2. I don’t know anyone who can’t use at least 8 minutes of solid street ball highlights in their week. OH BABY!

3. For those of you unimpressed with sports where you dribble your balls, perhaps you may prefer a sport where you prove your balls: Russian street tumbling.

4. Quite possibly the most sound street freestyle skater in the history of the sport, Rodney Mullen.

5. OK, OK, OK…but can skaters shoot hoops? (DC commercial, but still fantastic)

6. Jimmy V’s 1993 Espy Speech…if you finish watching this and still feel like you just lived a complete day - you are a better man than I.

Politics

1. I watched this live with four Republicans and not a single one of us knew what we were getting in to. Never before have I heard “well, he’s got a point” so many times in one night…Stephen Colbert’s White House Correspondent’s Dinner (part 1).

2. In recent memory I don’t recall being so proud to be living in America than I did when I first watched Keith Olbermann denounce George W. Bush’s recent commuting of Lewis “Scooter” Libby.

3. (Though not on YouTube) (nor a “clip”) Zeitgeist The Movie is by far one of the most convincing conspiracy theory films I have ever seen. Warning: Do not watch if you’re already severely depressed about the state of our nation and/or world.

TV/Showbiz

1. I honestly cannot believe that this clip was neglected from The Telegraph’s list…as a matter of fact it honestly needs no introduction; “Little Superstar.”

2. “Hold it, wait a minute, wait a minute…don’t bring anyone’s mother into this, she ain’t here. If it wasn’t for your mother, you wouldn’t be here. So remember when you put down one mother you’re putting down mothers all over the world” Mr. T “Treat Your Mother Right”

3. As overplayed as the brilliant More Cowbell skit is, I can’t help but praise Will Ferrell’s VH1 Storytellers with Neil Diamond skit even more. “…and two hours later I wrote ‘Sweet Caroline’.”

4. This honestly doesn’t belong in this category, but I have no idea what to think of David “Elsewhere” Bernal let alone how to categorize him. When I first saw this I thought it was the most amazing thing I had ever seen in my life…I was young…but, it’s still pretty cool.

Music

1. In exchange for a return to the show as a guest host on Saturday Night Live John Belushi requested that he decide the musical guest for the show, LA punk band Fear. In addition he invited a bunch of members of the DC punk community to join in the festivities by playing roll of house pit (Ian MacKaye included). In return the band played a special ode to the city and the fans had a little fun.

2. Appearing in defense of accusations that James Brown assaulted his wife he appeared live on TV…high out of his gourd. Living in America!

3. If only Danish musician Tommy Seebach had known what he was doing when he recorded this video (in which he and his band cover The Shadows’ “Apache”) we very well might have had a follow up to this theatric gold rush.

4. Quite frankly, any music video with puppets is pretty fantastic.
