Best of 2010: A Place to Bury Strangers

The year is ending on a sad note for the members of A Place to Bury Strangers. Word just came in that the band’s van (and more importantly, the contents of the van) were recently stolen while the group was performing in Rome. If you’re able to help the group and are interested in lending some financial support during the holiday season, a PayPal account has been set up to help ease the financial burden. Following the release of Exploding Head last year, 2010 looked to yield nothing but positivity for the band, but even before the recent crisis there were been a few bumps in the road along the way.

The band was notified this past spring by bassist Jono MOFO that he would be leaving the group just prior to their scheduled European tour with the Big Pink. But with loss comes new opportunity, and the band quickly recruited Dion Lunadon (formerly of the D4 and the True Lovers) to fill in. All of this isn’t to say that 2010 has been nothing but heartache for the group however. Continuing to push forward, the year offered some tremendous opportunities for the band including a spot on Colombia’s annual Rock al Parque festival, which remains the largest free South American festival, drawing a few hundred thousand attendees each year. Prior to the theft, it was on this high-note that Lunadon related his favorite memories from the past year via email, and hopefully those are the thoughts that remain long after the wound from the recent disaster heals.

Favorite personal performance: I would say Greece was my favorite. Never been there before. Was great playing our home turf death by audio too.

Favorite band seen live, or shared a stage with: I enjoyed touring with Crocodiles and my first tour with A Place to Bury Strangers was with the Big Pink which was a lot of fun.

First song comes to mind when thinking about 2010: “Ego Death.” Purley because I’m fairly new to the band and enjoy playing that song. Also Natural Child’s “Shame Walkin’” is right up my alley.

Favorite new discoveries: JEFF the Brotherhood, Sian Alice Group, Weekend, Shahs.

Best week of music: Probably any tour we have done this year. I love touring. Really enjoyed the west coast tour we did. Didn’t catch much at CMJ.

Most memorable road stop on tour: Arbys. Never had it before. Will never have it again.

Favorite song to play: Now we got a few new ones entering the set which is exciting. No titles yet though!
