The last Anti-Flag show I saw was during an election year. At the time I was really depressed because (for one reason) I felt as though my personal apathy was partial cause for a lot of unjustices I was seeing everywhere. I left that show happy and sweaty, but one thing didn’t sit well with me. I didn’t know if the band’s message of activism was actually being heard, or if the typical teen-punkers were just there to rock. It’s so easy to dismiss quasi-political bands like Anti-Flag and The (International) Noise Conspiracy because of the different audiences the bands cater too, the money they make from their music, and the genuineness of their message. No matter what, I think this stuff is really positive. Everyone has their bias (PETA), and everyone sees things differently (Moore/O’Reilly), but as long as dialogue occurs and minds start thinking. So, Anti-Flag might just be a post-post-post-punk band, but I think they do a pretty good job. The new album For Blood and Money comes out this month.
