The Raveonettes and the Black Angels both brought their dense, layered wall of sound to First Avenue on Monday night with spirited, incredibly loud sets by both bands, culminating in the Black Angels joining the Raveonettes for their last song of the night, in a celebratory sendoff on their last night of touring together.

Their dusty melodies evoke images of a bygone era, one when Appalachia-bound immigrants brought over the folk tunes of their native lands and melted them into the pot that would become American folk.
In a way “Sooner or Later” is very much a modern reprisal of the shoegaze sound, just with better production value and a much more encompassing sound.
At times the sound is studio-clean and at others it sounds as if it was recorded on a home cassette player. At its worst it’s pretentious art school music. At its best it’s like stepping into someone else’s fantastically grotesque dream.

The golden era legends haven’t had many hits since their earth shattering debut 93 ’til Infinity (recorded, of course, in 1993), but with Prince Paul on board to produce here’s to hoping that the old school crew can shine once again.
