The Besnard Lakes “The Besnard Lakes Are the Dark Horse” (Best of the Decade)

Besnard Lakes Are The Dark Horse

The Besnard Lakes 2007 album The Besnard Lakes Are the Dark Horse snuck up on me shortly after it came out and has continued to surprised and intrigue me ever since. With the LP, the Montreal-based band made one of the most sweeping and lusciously orchestrated albums of the decade. The songs, written by husband and wife team Olga Goreas and Jace Lasek, find the couple weaving back and forth from hushed melodies to crunching crescendos that are all epically spliced together for the greatest effect. Their music is dramatic and thoughtful while it still retains a sense of real emotion and urgency. While the band never gained the attention some of the other bands from their city did, they represented the scene well with The Besnard Lakes Are the Dark Horse.
