The Top 50 Music Videos of the 1990s (that Pitchfork missed)

Sure, when you’re compiling a list of the best music videos from the ’90s it’s wise to include the high spots from Spike Jonze, Michel Gondry & Chris Cunningham’s careers, but there’s a little more to the decade’s music video output than indie aesthetic… Take “Weird Al,” for instance: did Pitchfork find space for him on their recent Top 50 Music Videos of the 1990s list? Nope. Fiona Apple followed by Massive Attack followed by Ice Cube followed by Spiritualized; that’s what they’re bringing to the table. But don’t get me wrong: despite its predictability, the list is great. That said, it’s missing a few things here and there… so consider this to be a supplemental list offering suggestions which should be considered the next time anyone chooses to compile a breakdown of the best music videos from a decade which produced some classics. If nothing else, at least one of these should have made Pitchfork’s list… I mean, what would the ’90s be without Primus, anyways?

Wow, seems Pitchfork missed out quite a lot. Especially loving Eminem, Prodigy, Fun Lovin Criminals and Supergrass.

  • Some great picks in there. How can anyone make a list of best music videos of the 90s and not include November Rain??

  • I actually like Estranged more… not sure if I’m in the minority there, but it wouldn’t surprise me. I think it better represents how entirely immersed Axl had become with himself by that point in time (not that November Rain shied away from putting the spotlight on him, but I digress). From the dolphins to the aircraft carrier to the SWAT team, the whole thing is just nutbar crazy. That, and Wikipedia’s saying that the price of production for the vid floated around $4 million… compared to November Rain’s relatively shoestring budget of a meager $1.5 million. Love it!

  • I’ve been following this blog for 6 years and it’s about damn time Garth Brooks got some respect here!

  • Lots of great videos from the 90′s that picking the top 50 is really hard. Definitely gonna miss some more, even if you combine yours with Pitchfork’s. If I were to make one, Madonna will surely occupy at least 6 slots.
Pitchfork’s list was actually good, though I’m familiar only with 20 of them. I’m totally oblivious of Britpop bands like Pulp, Blur, and Supergrass (yours), but I liked them all.
Favorite from Pitchfork: Praise You. Still funny.
Favorite from Culturebully:November Rain. Love the Seymour tongue kiss part. ha!

  • Gosh, every Hype Williams video from back then was like his self portrait, lol. Remeber those ultra zoomed in “Hype Williams Presents” intros? I guess they worked. A Hype Williams video was like….designer music videos for hip-hop artists.
