Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears “Get Yo Shit”

Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears, a retro soul band from Austin, Texas, come across like a southern King Khan backed by the Dap Kings. The songs on their major label debut Tell Them What Your Name Is! clearly wear their soul, R&B and blues influences on their sleeve. The 10 song, 30 minute disc features some great swampy guitar, pulsing horns and some great rhythm back-beats. The disc’s opening track, “Gunpowder,” features some great horns and shows the band really flexing its muscle as Lewis lays out some amazing throat-shredding wails. Lewis, who in lieu of being very serious like many of his musical heroes, often fills his songs with less serious and more joking lyrical content. An example of this comes of the track “Get Yo Shit,” where Lewis describes the problems he has with his women and the law. While not all the songs step far enough out from under the shadow of what they are imitating and some of the lyrics are trite, it is still an overall fun experience and a disc that I think will get plenty of spins at outdoor parties this summer.

That “Get Yo Shit” song cracks me up: “She said you don’t even know my name… I said yeah, Melissa. She said naw dumbass, it’s Roxanne.”

  • wish they were coming here this summer, they were a blast at SXSW

  • It sure is great to see them with a full-length album.
