Breaking News: Minneapolis Loves Prince

The line-up for Prince’s First Avenue show began Friday afternoon at roughly 2pm from what I was told and has only grown to the point of about 900 people at this point in time (1:20 pm Saturday), which would leave some 500 or so wrist bands still available. The moderate turnout isn’t entirely surprising as those who have tickets to Prince’s afternoon Macy’s show would have to forgo the show’s 4:00pm start-time in order stand in line.

There’s a part of me that honestly wants to become infatuated with the ongoings and rush down hoping to claim a coveted spot to Prince’s first show at the honored First Avenue in some twenty years, but then again, there’s a part of me that doesn’t.

Not to say that 95° temperatures are enough to dissuade me from what may be one of the most historic concerts the venue has seen this millennium, but they kind of are.

While still fascinated with the star-factor of the weekend Ross Raihala released his collection of Prince memories taken from local musicians, fans and nobodys today in connection with his “Prince for the Day” feature in the Pioneer Press. I’m partial to Chuck Klosterman’s take on “Darling Nikki,” “It offers a lot of positive messages about human kindness, most notably that you shouldn’t judge a woman just because she occasionally masturbates in public.” (Part 1) (Part 2) (Part 3) (Part 4)

As a finale, I would like to reprise a thought I had concerning Prince’s 2004 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame appearance. An acquaintance attempted to correct my thoughts of the situation, noting that “He (Prince) turned, at a memorial, George Harrison, one of the most understated guitarists ever, and his song (aware it was done originally by Clapton) into a launchpad for a whacked out, noodly, self indulgent, repetitive and unoriginal pentatonic sonic vomit.” So, here is the video of Prince’s performance, in all of its unoriginal pentatonic sonic-vomit glory – enjoy.
