Buraka Som Sistema “IC19″

buraka-som-sistema

A year ago Buraka Som Sistema broke loose globally with a video for “Sound of Kudoro,” which at the time, seemed as though it was piggybacking off of the success of one of the song’s contributor’s, M.I.A. Since then, Buraka Som Sistema has won the award for “Best Portuguese Act” at the 2008 MTV Europe Music Awards, been nominated for Group of the Year at the 2009 Portuguese Golden Globes, and have “pretty much [become] the Britney Spears of Portugal right now.”

At the heart of the group’s sound is the wildly unique sound of kuduro, a combination of “traditional Angolan Kilapanga, Semba and Zouk with Western house and techno.” And at it’s core, the group’s 2008 release, Black Diamond, is a thunderous kaleidoscope, melding the sounds from British and American electronic acts with African percussion, daft toasting and soca rhythms. Though “Sound of Kuduro” is built around wildly spastic vocals and thunderous beats, the rest of the album remains steadily rooted in electronic music. In particular, “IC19,” which is so deeply entrenched in the sound that it would easily fit in amongst the artists who were atop electronic plateau of the mid-to-late 1990s.
