Next month Jeremy Messersmith will be joined by the Brooklyn duo KaiserCartel as the singer/songwriter returns to Minneapolis’ Cedar Cultural Center. Still riding high from last year’s acclaimed album The Silver City, Messersmith stands as one of the Twin Cities’ most unique voices, his gentle tone often serving as an extension of his simple wavy melodies. His songs are written from a perspective of a musician far more mature than his age, and when speaking on his musical beginnings last year, Messersmith explained,

I played in band in junior high for three years. It was a little strange because I was home-schooled so my mom would drive me to the school and drop me off for just one class! I find it hard to believe that I could make the music I write now without the music education I got as a child. Even though I don’t play trumpet as much as I used to, the foundations of melody and ear training still come in handy.

It’s that strange mixture of confinement and theory that has helped him craft his passion around the circumstances of his unique upbringing. In cooperation with 89.3 The Current the show will be hosted by the Cedar Cultural Center on May 9, tickets coming at $8 in advance or $10 at the door.

In support of last year’s Donor’s Choose drive to support local schools, Messersmith offered up a song that he wrote exclusively for the campaign titled “Tube Socks and Tennis Shoes.” The song is as fitting an introduction as any to the artist’s sound, as Messersmith builds the song around a gentle melody that warmly embraces his echoed whisper.
