Culture Bully Approved: Speak.Justice @ Music Box Theater

This isn’t the usual type of event you’ll see on Culture Bully, but to be fair: this is an unusual event. Speak.Justice acts not only as a fundraiser, but as a homecoming celebration for the 2009 National Poetry Slam champion team from St. Paul. On Wednesday, September 9, a group including members of the St. Paul “Soap Boxing” team (aka – the aforementioned national champions), the Minneapolis National Poetry Slam team, the Quest for the Voice MN youth poetry slam team, See More Perspective and Ryan Sarafolean will be performing at the Music Box Theater in Minneapolis.
Speak.Justice is acting as not only a celebration, but a fundraiser for the Kibera Girls’ Soccer Academy (KGSA). Kibera, Kenya, is one of the largest slums in the world and the KGSA is located there. All proceeds from the show will go to this unique school which mixes academics, athletics and the arts in a revolutionary way to help young women become leaders and catalysts for change in their community.
More on the 2009 National Poetry Slam championship team:
Soap Boxing, represented at Speak.Justice by Khary “6 is 9” Jackson, Sierra DeMulder and Kyle “Guante” Myhre (of hip hop duo Guante & Big Cats!), beat out teams from New York, San Francisco, Texas, Oakland and all over the country at the 2009 National Poetry Slam, the first time a team from Minnesota has won in the slam’s 20-year history.
And from City Pages:
The Twin Cities slam scene has grown to national prominence over the past three years, and can now officially claim five of the country’s finest slam poets… The Soapboxing team has been on the cusp of a breakthrough for the last two years, placing 15th and 13th in 2007 and 2008 at NPS, respectively.
Again, the event will be held Wednesday, September 9 at the Music Box Theater (1407 Nicollet Avenue). The show will run 7-9, $5, all ages, and there is parking at Emerson School.
