Cymbals Eat Guitars “And the Hazy Sea”

cymbals-eat-guitars-why-there-are-mountains

Cymbals Eat Guitars waste little time letting people know they are the real deal on their debut album Why There Are Mountains. Opening song “And the Hazy Sea” is an epic six minute jam that, like the rest of the album, is both instantly stunning and so well written that it is supremely rewarding even after many weeks of repeated listens. The song features the melodic yet ferocious guitars and soaring vocals that made Built to Spill famous in the ’90s and somehow manages to, even after six minutes of meandering left turns, leave me wanting more. The verses are light and bounce along and serve to make the thundering chorus even more astounding when it finally comes in. Lead singer Joseph Ferocious easily slides from a soft murmur to a throat shredding howl that is deceptively wide ranging and full sounding for a 20 year old. The thing that ultimately makes this CD so great is that while there are pretty clear influences that guided this young band, they write such great songs that they will be able to be enjoyed by people who have no idea what fuck the Northwest “indie” scene even is.
