Dead Man’s Bones “My Body’s a Zombie For You”

Whether it’s Scarlett Johansson covering Tom Waits or Zooey Deschanel’s She and Him experiment, to be an actor these days, you ain’t nothin’ unless you have some kind of musical side project going one in addition to your quirky Indie films. Now, nobody likes to make fun of egocentric actors more than myself, which is why it’s a bit frustrating when these endeavors not only don’t sound terrible, sometimes they are actually quite good (with the notable exception of Russell Crowe’s spectacularly terrible Thirty Odd Foot of Grunts). In yet another (not bad) crossover, Frankenstein and Me star Ryan Gosling is teaming up with lesser known actor Zach Shields to form a gothic-folk outfit called Dead Man’s Bones. The pair got some assistance from the Silverlake Conservatory Children’s Choir in recording their debut record. The songs are described as being creepy and haunting and if this track, “My Body’s a Zombie for You,” is any indicator, it may also be pretty good. The song combines Gosling’s sort of Roy Orbison-ish baritone over a little ’50s doo-wop piano, but for the most part it’s the kids who take center stage, and they sound like they’re having a blast. Check out the whole album when it comes out on October 6th; if not for the actors, do it for the kids.
