“Hole in the Earth,” the latest Deftones single, leads off what should be an impressive release from the nĂ¼-metal survivors. As a both samples and advanced versions of various songs surfaced the tracks fueled a blossoming majority opinion which confirmed that the band would indeed return to their rock roots after its hiatus. Previous rumors that the band would be releasing an album similar to any number of the variety of side projects, including Chino Moreno’s ambient Team Sleep, its members dabbled in during their time away from one another were immediately crushed when the leaked sample of “Beware The Water” was released via a fan site. “Hole in the Earth” carries tremendous power with it, continuing the tradition that the band has created for itself. It is comparable to the band’s last lead single, “Minerva,” in that it harmonizes with the driving guitars without unraveling into crushing breakdowns or ravaged vocal squeals.
