Doves “Jetstream”

Manchester’s Doves are back with Kingdom Of Rust, their first new record in four years, which is due out on April 7. And the first single from that record, “Jetstream,” is available now for free download via their website. As anyone familiar with the band knows, their music is full of atmospheric layers of sound and space, and this tune is no exception. It’s a bit of a slow builder, with a more electronic feel than anything on their previous record, and features lyrics that focus on modern transportation and whether or not it’s getting us where we want to go faster, or accelerating our demise. By the song’s halfway point, the drums finally kick in and the lift-off we’ve been waiting for finally arrives, and the track becomes propulsive and lively, with drummer Andy Williams leading the way amidst a chaotic wall of sound. “Jetstream” doesn’t have the tightly wound focus and feel of past lead singles like “Black And White Town” and “There Goes The Fear,” but it fits right in to the band’s general aesthetic and sound and gives us a glimpse into the direction that Kingdom Of Rust is heading in. And, whatever direction that may be, I’m just thankful that Doves are recording again. It’s been far too long since we’ve heard from them.

FYI, this isn’t the first single.

the first single is the title track and is being released the last week of March.

this is just a track they decided to offer up for free as a preview.

i dig the sound of the track, but definitely not single material imo.

  • Ghost says:

    great track, thank you.

  • Jon Behm says:

Wow – definitely more electronic. Am curious to hear where it leads. This track is pretty good but I think that if its the best off of the album, I will be disappointed

  • solace says:

Jon, if you dig the electronic stuff from them, check out their stuff under the name Sub Sub, which they were called before Doves, very similiar.

def doubt this will be one of the better songs on the record though. have heard a demo of the title track and it’s pretty good.

  • Brody McCoy says:

can’t wait for the record. I’d have to say I like Some Cities was amazing. Love all three albums. They also have a live cd. Check it out
