Edan “Drop Some Smooth Lyrics”

edan-by-the-tele

If you, like me, are an Edan fan who has been patiently waiting for another record from the eclectic Hip Hop genius I… unfortunately have no news for you. It looks like we still have longer to wait. Here’s a single though that perhaps you haven’t heard, since it was never released on either of Edan’s two LPs. “Drop Some Smooth Lyrics” is probably my favorite Edan track. It’s a great example of the MC’s lyrical combination of both funkiness and absurdism that has drawn comparisons to Kool Keith and MF Doom. In addition the track has that sparse production style that I associate with the Golden Age of Hip Hop. You don’t have to stretch the imagination much to see this guy rapping on a basketball court in Queens in 1988. Give it a listen, and if you dig, cross your fingers for a new Edan project in 2009.

I’d never heard of this cat Jon – very cool track. If I were given the task of matching the sound to the source – I’m not sure I could have done it… Then again, that’s part of the beauty of it… Def Jux has built an industry around promoting MCs who live far outside the normal look and sound.

  • Chris, I highly recommend checking out his second album “beauty and the Beat” – it’s terrific stuff

  • Beauty and the beat is the best hip hop album to come out in quite some time…

  • yo edan is the best primitive plus hooks ya then beauty and the beat blows youre mind
