Fool’s Gold “Surprise Hotel”
“Surprise Hotel,” the opening track on the self titled debut album by Fool’s Gold, is one of the most infectious, buoyant songs I have heard all year. Starting with afro-beat percussion and some sparkling guitar licks, the song bounces forward and draws the listener in for the journey that is the groups excellent first album. The vocals are sung in another language, but luckily it is the boundless rhythms and deft instrumentation, not the words, that really drive the track. The group, which is a side project for members of the great band Foreign Born, show their world music chops all over their outstanding eight song record. With tracks such as this, Fool’s Gold are a band that are easy to like and should really turn some heads on their current tour while opening for Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. Both bands will be stopping in Minneapolis tonight for a sold out show at the Varsity Theater.
