Frat Dad “Greg The Nerd”

I first heard Frat Dad on the amazing Underwater Peoples compilation I have talked about before, but the band really grabbed my attention with their latest 7” release. The thing that stuck out right away was that the band do not sound much like their hazy, dreamy labelmates, but their own take on lo-fi rock is nearly as exciting. The duo stripped away the pristine dream pop layers and replaced them with scuzzy, borderline psychedelic and completely shambolic garage rock. On the a-side “Greg the Nerd,” the song is completely wrapped in noise and shows the group bouncing along with a infectious rhythm and some searing melodies, albeit hidden deeply behind the ruckus. It sounds like the scuzzy jams of Ty Segall written and performed by a bunch of kids who skipped their morning Adderal. The band is releasing the 7” on a clear vinyl (with a CD-R) from the Underwater Peoples website and hopefully will be following up with some more material soon.
