Girl Talk “Night Ripper” (Best of the Decade)

Girl Talk’s third album, 2006’s Night Ripper, started making waves the summer before my final, alcohol soaked year at college. I didn’t have too many reference points as far as mashups went before this disc, save for the Grey Album and its spawns (especially the Black and Blue Album which combined Weezer and Jay-Z), but I could tell from the first time I heard “Smash Your Head” that this disc was something different. When I first heard Night Ripper I couldn’t decide if I wanted to gawk at the amazing skill this guy possessed or crack open a beer and get down. The latter prevailed more often than not during that year, with the amazing, kaleidoscope of samples on the disc serving as a common link between people who like all different types of music. I was more impressed with the Pixies and Neutral Milk Hotel portions where some of my friends would be rapping word for word right alongside Ludacris. In addition to his patchwork songs, his live show was a sight to be seen and always proved to be the biggest party in whatever city it happened to land in. No matter whether you are an audiophile or just someone who wants to party, Girl Talk has proven to be the best at what he does, with no better example than the amazing Night Ripper.
