Girls “Lust For Life”

To get any questions out of the way, “Lust for Life,” a newish song by the San Fransisco based band Girls, is definitely not an Iggy Pop cover. Despite its name the song is less sneering-punk and more of a mid tempo pop song that is one of the strongest the band has put out. The track, which features the band’s trademark jangly guitars and pop influenced song structures (including some stellar tambourine and what sounds like a harmonica), shows the great potential that the band has. With some propulsive guitars guiding the song along the jaded (and androgynous) lyrics kick in, “I wish I had a boyfriend, I wish had a loving man in my life, I wish I had a father, maybe then I would have turned out right.” Along with the great seven minute pop rock lead single “Hellhole Ratrace,” “Lust For Life” has given the band a big boost prior to even making an album, both tracks paving the way for a band that I imagine we will be hearing a lot about in the very near future.

I really dig “Hellhole Ratrace”–it’s got such a warm feeling, and with the addition of the sleigh bells and it’s like Christmas in the New Mexico desert.
