Gnarls Barkley at The 49th Annual Grammy Awards
The Grammy-sized performance went by largely unnoticed with the reunited Police lineup and Dixie Chicks domination leading the news following the award show, but it must be noted that Danger Mouse and Cee-lo put on a performance like none I have ever seen before. The performance of the overplayed masterpiece wasn’t over the top, nor were the costumes that we have all come to anticipate and enjoy. It was a quite version, more gentle than any other I have previously heard. And while it may not give first time listeners (mind you this was at The Grammy Awards, so there were plenty in attendance who know nothing about music) a good idea of the duo’s music, it breathes new life into a song that many have come to loath. During the coarse of the evening the group won both the award for Best Alternative Music Album and Best Urban/Alternative Performance.

man i’m so happy Cee-Lo finally GETS HIS
The Top of the Pops version is better imho – much tighter, and the snare drums are less pronounced and better timed. check it out on the ‘tube
I agree that this was a masterpiece. In a world of pre-packaged and pre-tested synth beats and hooks, Gnarls Barkley represents both an unimaginable step forward but also an affirmative nod to times when music was carefully produced and meant to withstand the test of time.
If you look to how many covers and styles of this song there are floating around out there it may just give you a picture of what contemporary music could look like if people actually gave more of a damn about making music than they do about making money.
Try looking for BBC Live Lounge covers for more music like this.
Not that making money is bad, but I’ll bet you that Cee-Lo and Danger Mouse have plenty of it.
