Like a computer screen that has been burned by a motionless image, so too has my brain been seared by Hot Hot Heat’s 2002 single “Bandages.” Unfortunately (for the band) the group’s new single “Let Me In” doesn’t have the same initial stickiness, but fortunately for the listener it doesn’t etch itself into one’s frontal lobe for what will most certainly be an eternity. As a matter of fact it sounds nothing like “Bandages,” but rather is sounds of something that has lately been recognizable of many modern Los Angeles bands; overproduced, over the top – ultimately mediocre rock. Considering how heavily the band was considered apart of neo-New Wave a few years back this new sound comes as a surprise, but unfortunately not a pleasant one.
