Hunting Club “Deep Sea Diver”

hunting-club-mn

Hunting Club, a new band based out of Minneapolis, have come on strong with their debut Pretty/Ugly EP. The best song from the 24 minute record is the opening track titled “Deep Sea Diver.” The song, which has the warm and encompassing orchestration and fragile aesthetic not unlike Grizzly Bear, finds the band creating a tender song that never feels forced or weak and is a testament to their strong songwriting. The track begins with quiet singing, shortly to be joined by a lush organ and some delicate, falsetto singing. The song, which slowly adds in the rest of the band over it’s four minute time span, builds in energy but never loses its intimate feel and is a swirling song that, like many Grizzly Bear tracks, is easy to get lost inside of. The rest of the EP takes its cues from other sources including the reverb-y vocals of Band of Horses and the grandiose Brit rock a la bands like Radiohead and Muse. I have yet to see a show from band, but look forward to hearing these songs fleshed out live and hope to hear much more from them in the future.

Funny you think they sound like Grizzly Bear, as Grizzly Bear have a song called “Deep Sea Diver”

I don’t hear the similarities though, to me they sound like Snow Patrol

  • Though I wouldn’t wish that comparison on anyone, I can’t say that I don’t hear it myself.

  • I don’t hear as much Snow Patrol, the vocals are hushed and soft which I think people equate to SP. Grizzly Bear comes through in the reverb. Red Hot is my favorite.

  • I saw them live at the Uptown. It was very enjoyable.
