The Amherst trio had towers of amps stacked up all over the stage, including one that was pointed directly towards front man J Mascis, in case his monitors weren’t providing him enough of his own guitar sound. And not having enough sound has never really been a problem for the group, and it certainly wasn’t on this evening as the band tore through a fiery 90 minute set that spanned the band’s entire career.

Why are people so firmly behind this song? The last two times I’ve listened to the local radio station I’ve heard it, and I’ve heard the DJ go on and on about how great it is… “the only thing i love more than the song is the song’s title” type deal

    pretty weak sauce

  • solace says:

it’s ok but i much prefer ‘Oh My God’

it’s a pretty good record tho, was on my EOY list last year, not super high or anything.

hoping she comes to town in August

  • solace says:

    LMAO.

i do like that she dedicated it to Hugh tho, i’m sure the ladies loved that.

not sure wtf is up with her hair. i just love her voice when it cracks, it’s endearing imo.

  • Chris DeLine says:

I enjoy “Oh My God” more, but it’s still kind of generic sounding.

  • solace says:

wouldn’t generic indicate it sounds like tons of other stuff? or no?

not saying it’s the most creative sound ever, but it stands out more than a lot of the other female fronted stuff from Europe as of late.

in this case fun wins out over originality for me :)

“wouldn’t generic indicate it sounds like tons of other stuff?”

    yup.

My reaction is probably due to the glowing reception people have been giving her live show. Take this recap for instance:

Really respect that guy so I take his words to heart… if he’s sayin’ she’s explosive, I believe it. Then I hear the song on the radio and see this Leno performance and it doesn’t add up.

love this girl. awesome mtv interview with her: http://bit.ly/IdaMariaMTVdd

  • solace says:

i guess… i just can’t say it sounds like a ton of other stuff that i’ve heard as of late. any specific examples?

honestly, i also haven’t really read too much about her in the last 6 months or so. i was way into the record last summer but she kinda fell off my radar until SXSW (which she missed both of her official gigs due to VISA issues but made it in time for Perez’s party :/, kind of annoyed me)

  • Chris DeLine says:

This is another one a friend said I should check out… bit better than “Naked.”

Maybe it’s because some of the guys on the site here have a tendency to post better bands with that (I don’t like calling it this, but don’t have a better way of describing it) garage rock sound… that’s what I hear here… just with a little less zest than some of the other bands I’ve heard of late have. Ida herself is unique, and the more I hear the more character I hear in her voice… but her voice doesn’t grab me when set against this particular sound.

Also, I don’t mean to imply that I don’t like my fair share of bands who most would probably call bland or generic. I do.

  • solace says:

fair enough. i thought she was a nice change of pace from the other UK female popsters, even if it’s as you say, just garage rock.
