The opening riff of “You’re Gonna Lose” is the musical equivalent to pulling out of your driveway with a group of friends as you take off on a road trip. You’re comfortable with the feeling of what’s going on, and you have a fairly good idea of what’s going to come of it—but there’s a distant element of the unknown that lurks beyond the surface.

If you’ve even remotely heard of Jay Reatard, you know that the band continues to teeter between consistency and chaos. Driving past that first mile marker, you begin to relax and let the wind catch your back and guide you wherever it leads. Likewise, “You’re Gonna Lose” captures a moment of relaxed debauchery, the song hinting at a series of tracks that are yet to come, some which will likely deliver an element of surprise, or at least that’s what you’re counting on. Returning to that first moment however, when things were easy going and you knew which way was up, “You’re Gonna Lose” was there, leading you into the unknown. While it’s a great way to start a trip, let’s hope there are a few jagged plot twists in the band’s future.
