Josh Ritter on The Late Show with David Letterman

Until now I haven’t listened to Josh Ritter. Whether it was all of the KT Tunstall-esque publicity surrounding last year’s album The Animal, or Stephen Kind listing it as his favorite album of the year for an article he wrote for Entertainment Weekly, or simply for the point that his name is far too close to that of deceased actor John Ritter, I just never gave him a chance. Again, until now that is.

The performance presents Ritter as a rootsy folk rocker along the lines of a late-stage Springsteen, very adult contemporary, making the Tunstall-reference all the more valid. Not bad, but on the same hand, it makes sense that Stephen King would like him.

Ritter is phenomenal. Springsteen and Dylan have to be the two I compare him to the most, and that’s a hefty load to carry, but he does it well. I’m going to see him in Columbus, OH tomorrow on his acoustic tour. I can’t wait for it.
