LCD Soundsystem “Losing My Edge” (Best of the Decade)

James Murphy’s rise to fame had a lot to do with the remixes he produced for his DFA record label, but his talents as a songwriter were instantly evident with the first single he released under his nom de plume LCD Soundsystem. “Losing My Edge” is wildly entertaining and is as smart as it is snarky, even if it is throwing insult bombs at the very kids who were likely to listen to it most. The premise of the song is Murphy talking about how he is getting older and losing touch as younger kids are coming up on the scene, but as he beings to fade away he can’t help but use the chance to talk himself up. Using his sharp wit, he channels that music loving asshole we all know: the one who says “I used to work in the record store. I had everything before anyone.” Near the end of the song Murphy not only spits out a hipster list (to end all lists) of influential bands, but he takes his tongue in cheek bravado to the next level, claiming to actually be there when Captain Beefheart, Suicide and Daft Punk got their starts. Bet you can’t top that! While the song is both poignant and hilarious, it flies by in its seven delirious minutes and easily was one of my favorite, and most played, songs of the decade.

Cheeky song – I dig it.

I think that this track is almost singlehandedly responsible for the Sonics’ reunion this year at SXSW. (I think that it was the spark that started a resurgence of interest in the formative garage band, resulting in their one time gig)

great track . remember watching em at creamfields 05 and it was one of the best gigs i ever seen . At the time creamfields was mainly a trance /hard house festival full of tiesto loving idiots, so there was prob only about 100 people watching lcd in this massive tent. it was so weird and cool watching em play this and every1 had loads of room to throw some shapes. ACE!!!
