LCD Soundsystem “Sound of Silver” (Best of the Decade)

Even for people like myself who absolutely loved portions of his debut, I think it is safe to say that no one expected something so amazing out of James Murphy when he released Sound of Silver, his sophomore record under his LCD Soundsystem moniker. Even if songs like “Losing My Edge” showed a pretty great songwriter, the songs of Sound of Silver took the whole game to the next level. While “North American Scum” was funny and got him the most attention (at least here in Minneapolis), it was the 1-2 punch of “Something Great” and “All My Friends” that made this my hands down favorite disc of 2007. Both songs are long, confessional tunes that show the serious side of Mr. Murphy behind funky, slowly build electro-grooves. “All My Friends” is especially powerful (and barring a late knockout, it is my favorite song of the decade) song that uses a driving keyboard riff to propel a song where Murphy seems to capture the essence of youth lost in a way even the best singer/songwriters of the decade could not. While you still could dance to Murphy’s sophomore record, Sound of Silver (and “All my Friends” in particular) is much more than a standard DFA release and found Murphy (more than a little surprisingly) joining the ranks as one of the best songwriters of the decade.

Could not agree with you more!
I’ve been an LCD Soundsystem fan since a few years after they first came out.
James Murphy has so much musical talent and it was interesting to see how he has matured as a songwriter since the birth of DFA.
What he has done for music will endure for decades and this song will be one of the tracks that defines the decade!
“Could not agree with you more!”
pfff, lemme try: I agree with you more than Dallas G. does, Josh.
Definitely a great call Josh. I love getting innocuous! Definitely a great album to groove to. Murphy is a genius.
“Someone Great” is still one of my favorite songs of the decade, glad to see a shout out to it. It’s subtle but extremely powerful.
I’m still not convinced of this album being anything genius as a whole, but All My Friends is pretty fantastic. Sounds like everything I like about early New Order.
