The Amherst trio had towers of amps stacked up all over the stage, including one that was pointed directly towards front man J Mascis, in case his monitors weren’t providing him enough of his own guitar sound. And not having enough sound has never really been a problem for the group, and it certainly wasn’t on this evening as the band tore through a fiery 90 minute set that spanned the band’s entire career.

In addition to performing an in-store set at The Electric Fetus, a DJ set with ?uestlove at the Foundation and his spot playing this weekend’s Rock The Bells concert at the Myth, Talib Kweli stopped by MPR at The Minnesota State Fair to talk with Mary Lucia. (Minnesota Public Radio)

Ross Rahaila recalls of Fergie’s State Fair performance, “Given the, uh, organic matter that’s often underfoot at the Minnesota State Fair, it was amusing to see all the young women dressed up in tight clubwear and high heels for Fergie’s Grandstand performance Saturday night. Of course, some would compare the musical output of the Black Eyed Peas vocalist to said organic matter. The critics at that paper on the other side of town just ran a piece that dubbed the 32-year-old a devil and claimed she’s ruining pop music. That makes for great copy, but it grants Fergie more importance than she’s actually earned.” (Pioneer Press)

Introducing The Goo Goo Dolls’ Friday night State Fair set, Rahalia also adds “The upstate New York threesome play the role of polished, middle-of-the-road soft rockers with far more conviction than they ever showed back when they were trying – really, really hard – to be the Replacements.” (Pioneer Press)

The 400 Bar evacuated attendees Saturday night as one of the club’s walls began to collapse. (Kare 11)
