Lupe Fiasco on AOL Sessions

There’s something far deeper and challenging beneath the surface of GQ’s recent Man of the Year award which was given to hip hop breakout Lupe Fiasco. The award’s meaning doesn’t come as relevant simply for the fact that it further supports hip hop as an outreach to both urban and suburban cultures, but in this case it serves as something far more, a step towards bridging between religious bases in modern American society. Intentional or not, nominating and awarding a Muslim-American in today’s society is bold and could very well have proven a disastrous move for the magazine. However by gracing someone with the level of class and integrity with the honor GQ looks to do what many others still shy away from; create situation for dialogue and applicatory criticism. Thankfully AOL has provided a supplimentary soundtrack to the news with its invitation to Lupe to perform as apart of its AOL Sessions. Check out the entire streaming video performance in addition to an interesting video interview with Lupe at AOL Sessions.
