Madlib & Guilty Simpson “Medicine Show” update

madlib medicine show

Going to the Stones Throw website at least once a week is something that I have made a habit of; after all, it is my favorite label and I love hearing news that pertains to any of their artists. Yesterday when I checked the site, I hit the mother load; it appears as though Madlib is going to be releasing a cornucopia of material (what’s new?) over the next year. His newest offering, The Medicine Show, will consist of 12 CDs (6 LPs) that will be released once a month. These outings will showcase some of Madlib’s newest hip hop productions, as well as remixes, beat tapes, Jazz and much more.

The first in the Medicine Show series will be cleverly titled Before the Verdict (I hope you all appreciate the title as much as I did) and will feature Detroit native Guilty Simpson; the album will consist of 17 cuts of remixes and new tracks. One may want to think of it as a preface for the OJ Simpson album. With that being said, we have the first track off of Before the Verdict called “The Paper,” and if Guilty’s rhymes don’t get you, Madlib’s beat should send you into convulsions. Breeding what sounds like Indian influences with hard, cranium cracking synths is one hell of a way to get the listener’s attention. I guess that’s why they call him the Beat Konducta. This sounds pretty awesome. I’ve been really into the Beat Konducta series over the last year…

  • What would you say is your favorite volume of Beat Konducta?

  • I love vol. 3-4, but I haven’t really given 5-6 enough time to be fair.

I love the samples of different contries music. I really liked both Vol. 3-4 and the Oh No Record.

Who else is doing stuff like that? I am not connected to that genre (off the beaten path sample based instrumental hip hop) enough, but have loved what I have heard.

  • I haven’t given 5-6 as much of a listen either, but I’ve been partial to the first two volumes.

  • I really think you’d enjoy 5-6 Adam. I love the first two volumes, but the way that Madlib paid homage to Dilla on 5 & 6 is impeccable. I don’t know if you’re a Dilla fan, but if you are you will definitely appreciate Madlib’s efforts.

  • Just getting into checking out Dilla. Donuts is the only thing I have so far.

  • tribute to dilla my fav.

  • yessir!
