The Amherst trio had towers of amps stacked up all over the stage, including one that was pointed directly towards front man J Mascis, in case his monitors weren’t providing him enough of his own guitar sound. And not having enough sound has never really been a problem for the group, and it certainly wasn’t on this evening as the band tore through a fiery 90 minute set that spanned the band’s entire career.

Newcomer Dr. Waumiau presents his first album entitled Super MashUp Land; which thankfully despite its cover has nothing to do with the Super Mario Brothers.  The best tracks include a Snoop Dogg mash (though how many new ways can you mash “Drop It Like It’s Hot”?) and a fantastic mix featuring Lady Sovereign and Nas rapping over the Futurama theme.  Along those lines, there are a log of tracks that in concept sound horrible, but actually turn out alright.  A while back I heard a great mash between PJ Harvey and Cassius, and Super Mashup Land does something similar with using Cassius and Reel 2 Real’s “I Like To Move It;” like I said, horrible concept, not a bad result.  Speaking of early ’90s dance music, how about Gilette’s “Short Dick Man;” yup it’s there, mashed with The Ghostbusters theme…this time around however, bad concept, bad result.  The album as a whole has more good tracks than bad, which is rare for a mashup album, so by that alone I suggest checking it out.
