Why do you have to go there Emily Haines? Like Republican vs. Democrat, or Catholic vs. Protestant, the age old Beatles vs. Rolling Stones question is one that never fails to get people riled up over the merits (and coolness) of each band. Haines, the lead singer of the Canadian band Metric, brings this question to the table on the song “Gimmie Sympathy,” from the band’s fourth album Fantasies. With some pulsing synths and a soaring chorus, the song is classic Haines, who has also spent time playing with Broken Social Scene and Stars. When she asks “Who would you rather be, the Beatles or the Rolling Stones?” as the driving rhythm reaches its climax, it is a moment that may make people not care anymore about the petty argument and just want to put this great song on repeat.
