What’s Good in Nashville? (Week in Review)

• The 2011 Bonnarroo lineup has been announced and will feature the likes of Eminem, Arcade Fire, the Black Keys, Buffalo Springfield, Lil Wayne, the Strokes & Dr. John as headliners. A full listing of artists set to perform is available here.

• Big news for Vandy as Public Enemy, Kid Cudi, the National, Matt & Kim, Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros and Sarah Bareilles will perform at this year’s Rites of Spring concert.

• In addition to announcing a slew of dates together, the Greenhornes & JEFF the Brotherhood will be releasing a tour-only split 7″ via Infinity Cat. The run will be limited to 666 copies.

The Black Keys were big winners at the Grammys this year, taking home trophies for “Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals” (“Tighten Up”), Best Alternative Music Album (Brothers) & “Best Recording Package” (Brothers). Also honored were Rob Jones & Jack White for “Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package” (the White Stripes’ Under Great White Northern Lights). Perhaps most importantly though, the Tennessean gauged “emotions” concerning the evening’s event from Nashville-based artists.

• While absent from the list of winners at this year’s show (they deservingly lost to Neil Young in the “Best Rock Song” category), Kings of Leon were still on hand at the Grammys. The group will be one of many included in the next lackluster phase of VH1′s once-seminal Storytellers series, joining the likes of Ray LaMontagne, Cee Lo Green, My Morning Jacket, Death Cab for Cutie and Maxwell.

• Still vocal about feeling as though she was snubbed at this year’s award show, Ke$ha kicked off her first headlining tour this week with a date in Portland. In reviewing the show Oregon Music News concluded, “[We] had hoped that it could have been more, but then again, there’s not much more to Ke$ha.” SPIN called the event “well-executed schlock” and Oregon Live jumped in on the review-front, breaking down the humanity of it all, “The saddest scene in the world: A 10 year old on a Tuesday night collecting confetti off the floor of a Ke$ha show.” A photo set from the show is available here. Elsewhere, the vocalist recently recorded a video for Australia’s “Say Something” campaign in support of gay marriage in the country. Because that’s exactly what such a serious topic deserves, quips about “We R Who We R” and a glitter references. Guess Australia is as fucked up as the rest of us after all.

The Black Keys hit both Conan and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno where they performed “Howlin’ For You.” Elsewhere in the land of Keys, drummer Patrick Carney got engaged this past week. Poor guy. The duo will be starting work on a new album pretty soon, as well. Rumor has it that it won’t be recorded at Dan Auerbach’s new Nashville studio, however, but out west somewhere.

• A new Goodyear commercial features a Turbo Fruits jam. Finally a local act has been able to latch onto some of that elusive tire commercial money.

For his next album, Justin Townes Earle appears to have a UK state of mind.

The Civil Wars & Decemberists topped the charts as the best selling albums at The Groove & Grimey’s this past week.

• Metromix has some local polls running right now where you can vote on such a categories as “Best Concert,” “Best Place to See a Show,” (which is apparently different than) “Best Live Music Bar,” (which is apparently different than) “Best Live Venue” & “Best Local Band on the Rise.”

• Tour & show updates: PUJOL has updated April & March dates including at show at Exit/In with Kurt Vile, Vetiver will play The End in March, John Vanderslice & Damien Jurado will hit The Basement in May, Queens of the Stone Age will play the Ryman in March, the Felice Brothers will perform at Exit/In in April, Mogwai will do the same at Exit/In in May, the Twilight Singers & Margot and the Nuclear So and So’s will stop at Mercy Lounge in May, the Flaming Lips will play the Ryman in May, Exene Cervenka (of X) will play Exit/In in April and Over the Rhine will perform at Grimey’s tomorrow.

Here’s what Doug had to say on the man in a recent interview with CB, “He’s a guy from Finland, he’s a musician, he’s on the bill. But he’s out of Nashville. Yeah, it’s very funny; I haven’t worked with him for a while: it’s fucking great. It’s not a comedy act but he’s just inherently funny. A very thick Finnish accent and he’ll do—as well as original stuff—he’ll do, you know, Lionel Richie, [Very thick accent, singing] ‘Hello, is it me you’re looking foooaaa?’ I think he’s moving back to Finland, but he says that every time I talk to him.”

The Tennessean talks with the JaneDear Girls.
