What’s Good in Nashville (Week in Review)

Hayley Williams: You just went through a nasty public breakup with your band’s founding members, what are you going to do next? Survey says: party with remaining friends at a professional wrestling match and release a snippet of a solo song in the face of your band just being called a guise for your solo project. Nice. Also, that MTV special about the band’s drama aired last week… I genuinely tried to watch it, but only made it as far as the introduction when Paramore was announced as a band that “transcended punk rock music.” Yes. They literally said that.

The White Stripes‘ 2010 live compilation Under Great White Northern Lights has gone gold. Also, the collection was recently nominated for two Grammy awards: “Best Boxed Or Special Limited Edition Package” & “Best Long Form Music Video.” News from Mrs. White Stripes as Karen Elson‘s “Pretty Babies” recently served as the soundtrack to Tom Ford’s Spring/Summer 2011 Collection. The presentation video features the likes of Elson, Julianne Moore & Beyoncé modelling.

Young Buck just can’t seem to catch a break these days. First the IRS gets up his ass, now Wells Fargo has filed court papers to obtain the rights to foreclose on his 2002 BMW X5 SUV. I guess when you’re already $300k in debt, seven months worth of car payments aren’t really your top priority. Not to rub it in, and 50 Cent might be an asshole (I’m not saying he is), but the man’s got an endless amount of hustle in him. We’ve got snow in Nashville, too… get on it Buck!

• Video is now available from Cold War Kids‘ recent show at Third Man Records. Also on the Third Man front, the Greenhornes recently wrapped a studio session with Live Buzz.

• Welcome to 2k11: The End now has a website.

• This just in: Live music is popular in Nashville.

Taylor Swift had another record-setting week; her Speak Now album earned the “distinction of notching the lowest-ever sales frame for a No. 1 album since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking data in 1991.” Tay-Tay also released a video this week where she gets all introspective about a breakup… after going through a public breakup with the guy from Bubble Boy. Turning sympathy into sales, gotta love it. Also, for all the Swiffers out there: don’t feel too bad for the girl. Her next celebrity escort is only a phone call away.

• Here are the releases that sold like hot cakes (at least when hot cakes were slightly more fashionable than they are now) at Grimey’s last week.

New Music/Release Info

• Touched on the 7″ last week, but PUJOL‘s “Bonedaddy”/”Getnhard” is being released with proceeds going in support of Candice Ferguson of who co-runs Battletapes Recordings. Candice has recently been treated for cancer. Also, PUJOL will be hustling hard next month, knocking out nine dates in nine days starting in Alabama and ending in Ohio.

Sam & Tre are rockin’ the tight pants tip with their self-titled debut album, featuring their self-described “unique brand of Electro Glitch Hip Hop.”

The AK (Kaby’s Day Out) and Classic Williams (SMH) dropped some fresh mixtapes recently.

Ten out of Tenn‘s Trent Dabbs will be releasing his sixth studio album, Southerner, next month.

• Pop rockers the Class of 98 (who didn’t even come together as a band until 2004; liars) have reunited and just released their follow-up to 2006′s Tough This and Die. The Album Project explains of Heaven: “Laced with energy and passion, their second full-length album packs a punch that a lot of today’s music seems to lack.” While a physical LP isn’t out yet, the album is currently available for streaming on the group’s Bandcamp page.

• New on the mashup/remix front: Ugly Lovely just dropped a bootleg fusing Bassnectar & Bonecrusher while EarthMoonEarth recently remixed Phoenix’s “Fences.”

Evan P. Donohue‘s cassette-only Late Autumn EP is now available online.

Majestico‘s 26 minute Live at Japan recording is now available online at Bandcamp.

Nashville’s Dead unveiled the first two releases from their new label this week.

Interviews

The Daily Tar Heel interviews longtime Memphis garage rocker Greg Cartwright, who recently teamed up with Nashville’s Coco Hames (the Ettes) in forming the Parting Gifts. Pitchfork recently gave their debut release, Strychnine Dandelion, a solid 7.5.

Nashville Scene interviews Jonas Stein. If, for some reason, you don’t already know this: He’s pretty much doing everything there is to do right now.

2Ls returns with the second part of a video interview with Dee Goodz, who just released Odizzybeatz-produced track “Bananas” this week.

• An interview with Little Viking went up on Culture Bully this week. You should probably be all over that by now. #ShamelessSelfPromotion
