New Be Your Own PET: “Black Hole”

The sporatic “Food Fight,” sounding about as close to a Dischord-version of the band as anything heard before, is just one of four newly released songs available on Be Your Own PET’s MySpace page. In addition to the ode to “Fuuuuuun” you’ll find “The Kelly Affair” and “Super Soaked,” both representing sound closer to the bulk of the Nashville band’s 2006 debut release. The best from the new tracks however is “Black Hole,” a song about caffeine and recklessly breaking stuff in response to living a town that’s going nowhere. I don’t necessarily think that if the upcoming Get Awkward fails to deliver radio friendly tracks, such as “Bicycle, Bicycle, You Are My Bicycle” and the ever-addictive “Adventure,” that it will be perceived as a flop. Actually, if the other eleven tracks on the album shy away from repeating that pattern, it might just be a triumph – it would be a shame for a band this fresh and creative to fall into a trap of consistency. In a perfect world, Get Awkward would somehow meld the deceiving rhythm section of off-shoot Turbo Fruits with the casual destruction of Jemina Pearl; either way it should be great.
