Trent is working his ass off to create something vital, an alternative to all the commercial drivel out there. He puts out a great album for you, free of charge, and you have the nerve to sit there and bitch about it?

Take a good look at yourself, and when you've done something anywhere near as important and inspiring as 'The Slip', THEN come back to me with your petty whining. Until then, if you don't like the album, fine, don't listen to it. It's not like you had to pay for it.

I genuinely like the slip. Although it seems simple, the album is suprisingly layered. The up-tempo tracks have a punk feel about them that I find appealing and are more directed lyrically and sonically; instead of sounding frantic and chaotic, they are direct, topical, and urgent. The lyrics do not come off as adolescent to me, although I find this in some of his previous work. As always there is a rawness to his work, but also has a meticulously production, as is his trademark. "Lights in the Sky" is perhaps one of my favorite NIN songs to date. As a ballad, I may like it even more than "Hurt". The two instrumental tracks sort of lose me, although I enjoy "The Four of Us Are Dying." "Demon Seed" exhibits what is becoming a trend in Reznor's later work: rising melodies and interplaying vocals that blend with his distinct rythmic styles. Over all, this is does not outdo Year Zero, but it has very real strengths and is a solid effort, and reaches moments of great poignancy and beauty.

Kyle you should get over yourself.
You said yourself it took a while to warm to With Teeth so give Slip the same chance.
I wasn't keen on With Teeth at first and I'm not keen on Slip at the minute. But I will keep listening to it and trying to find those distinctive nuances of greatness that keep us all coming back for more.
Personally I would prefer if he went past the Fragile era and started doing more Downward Spiral-esque material. But I respect that Reznor has completely moved on as a person, and has done between most every one of his albums. If you're a fan of NIN you should have realised that. Don't expect more of the same, because chances are you'll be disappointed.

Nine Inch Nails is and always will be my favorite band. When they came out with the "With Teeth" album, it took me a while to warm up to it and actually get into it. I love that album now along with most of "Year Zero". Ghost was a cool attempt at a unique and fresh sounding album and so it was acceptable to me, but then this album, "The Slip", came out. I have to admit I was not too impressed. I guess I'm a little attached to "The Fragile". We can only hope he goes back in that direction. It was a truely meaningfull album and it melts you every time through. Only time will tell if NIN comes out of its "downward spiral".
