The Amherst trio had towers of amps stacked up all over the stage, including one that was pointed directly towards front man J Mascis, in case his monitors weren’t providing him enough of his own guitar sound. And not having enough sound has never really been a problem for the group, and it certainly wasn’t on this evening as the band tore through a fiery 90 minute set that spanned the band’s entire career.

Everything changed when Craig Finn returned to the scene with his new musical charges the Hold Steady. While his original group, the amazing Lifter Puller, began to fade out in the late-’90s before Finn moved to NYC, the Hold Steady took no time to catch on with the masses.

Ekström recently took some time to answer a few questions about the band’s new album “Islands,” the trials that led to its creation, and the inspiration it took to continue with the release despite continual setbacks.
