Peter and the Wolf “Safe Travels” (Best of the Decade)

While some songs stick with you for just a short period of time, the best ones seem to hit you every time you hear them. “Safe Travels,” a great song by Austin based troubadour Peter and the Wolf, is one of those songs that never ceases to amaze me. With its sly shaker intro, great ringing guitar line and staggering harmonies, the song is memorizing right from its opening seconds. Although the song was written about a specific subject (a goodbye to Red Hunter’s brother before he went on a trip abroad), it is one of those songs that seems to be capable of meaning something different thing each person. In essence it’s a sad song, but has the strange ability to seem both redeeming and uplifting in light of bad situations, which helps to make it such a timeless track. Hunter’s voice is the great sound of a young man who is both road weary yet optimistic for what may happen in the future. This is a song that I have played to many unsuspecting people in the weary hours before the sunrise after a long night of drinking, and most have agreed that it is a great song that deserves a place among the best songs of the ’00s.

Totally agree here. This is song is gorgeous and I’ve played it countless times. It always puts me in a very good place, if you know what I mean.
This is a great song – I would also put “Better Days” up there in the pantheon – that’s one of my Peter and the Wolf faves.
