Peter Bjorn and John on Late Night with Conan Obrien.jpg

A link to Peter Bjorn and John’s performance on Late Night with Conan O’Brien was recently posted over at Gorilla vs. Bear and those commenting on it seem to lean towards suggesting that the performance was that of a poor one. However I believe it to be more along the lines of what was suggested by Jessica Suarez over at Pitchfork, “It’s great to see how PB&J turn a talk show appearance into something resembling a spot on American Bandstand or Ready, Steady, Go!: Peter MorĂ©n’s whistle solo and Victoria Bergsman’s shy, head-down vocals are great television, especially when she finally meets his eyes for the chorus. The band’s snappy vintage suits and Ms. Bergsman’s Peggy Moffitt-esque haircut also lend it a classic 60s feel.”

While the group may have not won the hearts and minds of the viewers of the performance it made a distinction between what’s typically seen on American and European television a reality. Up until recently Top of the Pops was still a key factor in the success of countless groups, no? Maybe American crowds aren’t ready for this type of performance after all.
