I feel like I have been under a rock. Who are these guys?? I know I’m reaching my 30’s but I can’t be that out of touch…. Answer is I can, and I know why. Music as of late has failed to impressed me. So for almost a year I cataloged every vinyl, tape, and cd from youth to now to my Zune player and been holding my oldies but goodies treatment. Glad to hear a band that can possibly be placed next to David Bowie, Radio Head, The Cure(mentioned to inject this comment with there Legacy) in my mp3 player. I would love to hear more from these guys and will be sampling them soon.

txdust, you’re in luck as they’ve been around over a decade now!

sadly they’re very unappreciated here in America, but hopefully that changes some with the new album.

imo you can’t go wrong with any of their records, but the last 3 in particular are great

  • travis says:

tx dust, saw em 3 years ago at acl. they are amazing live and yes you are out of touch and Radiohead is one word. ha

  • Jason says:

Too bad they don’t have the 3rd set they did from SNL (as the credits were rolling) the only other band I’ve ever seen get a (televised) 3rd set was U2. That goes to show you how good these guys are.

  • Chris DeLine says:

Coldplay had a third song fully televised. There goes that theory, huh?

Stereogum’s got the third song covered: http://stereogum.com/archives/video/phoenix-snl-video_062511.html

  • FeRD says:

Yeah, but the televised third set from Coldplay — complete with Chris’ odd Obama remarks, seeming to sorta dedicate the number to the campaign, if one consciously chooses that as their interpretation — felt shot through with this tangible sense of significance, like we were all witness to the sort of rare, once-in-a-lifetime event people still talk about years later.

(Which is a pretty accurate portrayal of what it actually WAS. For over 30 years SNL’s formula has had a set-your-watch-by-it reliability, the few departures such rareties that each is remembered as an event of historical significance.) Even watching on TV, that feeling permeated the studio so tangibly that you half-expected to see a visible charge in the air. And that before Coldplay had so much as played a note!)

So if Coldplay’s redeemingly stirring (compared to the previous two numbers) performance of “Yellow” doesn’t make them even the second band to hold that distinction… no matter how many other examples others can remember of times when this event has occurred in the past… it’s still something so rare that we recognize every previous moment that it’s occurred as a separate, significant historical event!

  • Chris DeLine says:

You’re taking this far too seriously.

  • Jason says:

It was not a theory. I didn’t publish it in a scientific journal or anything. (I guess you missed the part where I said “the only other band I’VE ever seen…”) I didn’t see the Coldplay episode, but I think we can all agree getting a 3rd set on SNL is rare and usually reseverd for really, really good bands, yes?

You have posted a link to the Phoenix 3rd set thus making you awesome. Thanks Chris.

  • Jason says:

    Duh.
I just now got your joke.

  • another travis says:

does anybody know the name of the third set?
    ive been looking for it..

  • Jason says:

The 3rd song is called “Too Young”.

  • frenchfauxpau says:

They haven’t got a drummer in the four piece set, but the guy’s playing drums and keyboard were kickin ass! does anyone have any idea who the drummer was? I’ve looked everywhere, blogs just mention the drummer was badass but no one has a name….

  • christie says:

The drummer is named Thomas Hedlund. He plays with Phoenix a lot but is officially a member of The Perishers, a most excellent Swedish band. myspace.com/theperishers

  • thom says:

Pearl Jam played a third set back in the day.
