The drummer is named Thomas Hedlund. He plays with Phoenix a lot but is officially a member of The Perishers, a most excellent Swedish band. myspace.com/theperishers

They haven't got a drummer in the four piece set, but the guy's playing drums and keyboard were kickin ass! does anyone have any idea who the drummer was? I've looked everywhere, blogs just mention the drummer was badass but no one has a name....

It was not a theory. I didn't publish it in a scientific journal or anything. (I guess you missed the part where I said "the only other band I'VE ever seen...") I didn't see the Coldplay episode, but I think we can all agree getting a 3rd set on SNL is rare and usually reseverd for really, really good bands, yes?

You have posted a link to the Phoenix 3rd set thus making you awesome. Thanks Chris.

Yeah, but the televised third set from Coldplay -- complete with Chris' odd Obama remarks, seeming to sorta dedicate the number to the campaign, if one consciously chooses that as their interpretation -- felt shot through with this tangible sense of significance, like we were all witness to the sort of rare, once-in-a-lifetime event people still talk about years later.

(Which is a pretty accurate portrayal of what it actually WAS. For over 30 years SNL's formula has had a set-your-watch-by-it reliability, the few departures such rareties that each is remembered as an event of historical significance.) Even watching on TV, that feeling permeated the studio so tangibly that you half-expected to see a visible charge in the air. And that before Coldplay had so much as played a note!)

So if Coldplay's redeemingly stirring (compared to the previous two numbers) performance of "Yellow" doesn't make them even the second band to hold that distinction... no matter how many other examples others can remember of times when this event has occurred in the past... it's still something so rare that we recognize every previous moment that it's occurred as a separate, significant historical event!

Stereogum's got the third song covered: http://stereogum.com/archives/video/phoenix-snl-video_062511.html
