The Amherst trio had towers of amps stacked up all over the stage, including one that was pointed directly towards front man J Mascis, in case his monitors weren’t providing him enough of his own guitar sound. And not having enough sound has never really been a problem for the group, and it certainly wasn’t on this evening as the band tore through a fiery 90 minute set that spanned the band’s entire career.

A week ago today the 2007 Pitchfork Music Festival kicked off in Chicago with a performance with three fantastic acts, each performing one of their most heralded albums; Slint with Spiderland, GZA with Liquid Swords and Sonic Youth with Daydream Nation. Not to be outdone, Saturday and Sunday both included an amazing line up featuring many fantastic artists. Fantastic sets from the likes of Clipse to Cat Power. Bizarre sets from Girl Talk (which subsequently featured members of Grizzly Bear, Beachhouse and Deerhunter) to Dan Deacon (which subsequently was shut down by the fire marshal). Though plagued by sound problems I think it’d be safe to say that those who made it out to the festival had a great time, though in retrospect I wish I was one of them.

Phenomenal Chicago bootleggers The Hood Internet celebrated the week leading up to the festival by creating a special set of mashups featuring many artists that would later be featured in the festival. Typical of the DJs every track found a special sound, but no more than DJ STV SLV’s GZA/Sonic Youth mashup “Beneath the Candle.” The other artists featured throughout the week were Cadence Weapon/Professor Murder, De La Soul/Jamie Lidell and Clipse/Cat Power.

Gorilla vs. Bear’s Chris Cantalini continued his fantastic ongoing Polaroid series capturing some twenty shots featuring the likes of Clipse with Chan Marshall, Dan Deacon with Girl Talk and Wu Tang Clan’s Cappadonna. (link)

Some of the finer footage of the festival came from a number of key blog resources. Matt Jordan of You Ain’t No Picasso took some phenomenal shots of some of key performances including GZA, Sonic Youth, Of Montreal, Menomena, Dan Deacon, Clipse and Mastodon. In addition to some great commentary and photo sets Ryan Matteson of Muzzle of Bees took some video footage which can be seen here: Girl Talk and Dan Deacon. Music For Kids Who Can’t Read Good’s Taylor Johnston also had some great photo sets including Iron & Wine and Battles. And what would a recap of the Pitchfork Music Festival be without Pitchfork’s three day recap: (Day 1) (Day 2) (Day 3).
