Another term for "trashy" in respect to Ms. Jett might be "more honest than socially acceptable".
Joan was a presence and a talent doing rebel-teen stuff in the Runaways days. She was more obvious of a presence and talent when she came out with the Blackhearts. Maybe her lyrics could use more depth and polish, but it is useful to remember she has never presented herself as any kind of intricate art-rocker. She is the in-your-face street punk. She is the Badass Chick. She is rompin', stompin', kickass Rock and Roll.

She's seen a lot of rock history come and go. She was there before punk started in LA and was a veteren by the time it started. She and the Runaways were brought up under the tacky wing of Kim Fowley. She produced the first Germs LP and later fronted the reformed Gits (as Evil Stig) after their lead singer (Mia Zapata) was murdered.
I too had a gut reaction to dislike her after becoming a (short-lived) MTV star, but I didn't know what a fascinating history she had.
