Peter Walker “Young Gravity”

Throughout the literature relating to Peter Walker there seemed far too many Neil Young and Wilco references at first glance to maintain a healthy relationship with one’s musical identity. However tacky it may be to start a review by analyzing a music’s reference points, it becomes hard to hear anything but when listening to the music behind the music. Fact, Neil Young and Wilco are present. The overemphasized, drawn-out alt-country is heavily accounted for, as is the gentle distortion that allowed Young to blossom among a new breed of fan in the ‘90s. But references aside, what is Young Gravity about and who is Peter Walker?
The track “Flagship” is the utmost of the Neil Youngiest of tracks. Unflinching, even in structure, the track seems to be a third party take on what Neil Young would have played if only he were born a few years later. But once again, with all repetition of influence aside, the music shades Walker’s songs in a haze that potentially blinds the listener identifying just who Peter Walker is? There have been times where it is easy to separate the artist and their influence, allowing a divide that ensures that an individual’s voice is heard; but after listening to Young Gravity’s opening tracks, “What Do I Know” and “39 Stars,” an unsettling feeling of discontent begins to grow as this separation becomes blurred. It’s at this point in time that I become unsure that Young Gravity really helps me answer the question of who exactly Peter Walker is.
Through a variety of sources it became understood that the theme’s of Walker’s songs were purposefully made universal so as to develop a sense of comradery or understanding between musician and listener. And I wholeheartedly wish to come across with the opinion that Walker has recorded some very enjoyable music, and has done so with a very positive vibe and feeling surrounding the recording. However, alt-country begs and cries personal emotion, one that drowns out everything around it. In this case, the songs ring too pop-centric, when performing a denser brand would not only allow the listener to understand the artist, but separate Peter Walker from the rest of the like-sounding genre.
