The Amherst trio had towers of amps stacked up all over the stage, including one that was pointed directly towards front man J Mascis, in case his monitors weren’t providing him enough of his own guitar sound. And not having enough sound has never really been a problem for the group, and it certainly wasn’t on this evening as the band tore through a fiery 90 minute set that spanned the band’s entire career.

Wait, what? If upon 30 seconds of listening it becomes necessary for me to re-verify whether or not what I’m actually hearing is what was intended to play – should that be considered brilliantly effective or disastrously horrific? Rilo Kiley’s first single from their forthcoming Under The Blacklight demonstrates that our favorite child stars certainly aren’t short on ideas. In “The Moneymaker,” Jenny Lewis is successful in capturing the dirty sound that one might associate with the video’s sexy subject matter. The song is boring, but I am sickeningly mesmerized. I’ve got a feeling that there is a lot more to this…

  • I was totally shocked when I heard this song. It has slowly grown on me and now I like it just fine. I hope it fades to the back of my mind when the album comes out though.

  • Chris DeLine says:

I like the song…hoping for more from the album though.

  • Pierre says:

I agree. The sound is boring, the crescendo doesn’t sound full, the guitars and beats are predictable and thin, the vocals fall flat.
