After dozens of listens of the thirty second teaser that was released earlier this week Smashing Pumpkins’ “Tarantula” was released to radio stations today…and…it doesn’t suck. Nor does it inspire the horrid Zwan comparisons that accompanied the sample’s release.

To me it sounds like later Smashing Pumpkins. Not Machina either, maybe Machina II. I haven’t decided on that one.
But it’s something that I’ll let all the fanboys argue about. And I’ll probably let them say that it could have been so much better while I can’t escape it on the radio.

I suppose I might not quite qualify as a fan boy, but I’d like to think that it couldn’t have been any better…I think this is the best that Billy and his new crew could have done…and I like it.

If anyone wants to download the song, I’ve converted it to MP3 and posted it to my blog:

I think it rocks at warp speed. as a long time pumpkinhead (’93) its ‘bodies’ meets ‘crash car star’ meets ‘drown’ (the soft break 3/4 into the song); but with a fresh production format. kudos.

not as bad as i’d expected, but far from great either…
just hope the album is better than the last 3 (if you include Machina II) albums, that’s all i ask…

Considering that Zwan was just as much Smashing Pumpkins as the band is now would it be wrong to suggest that the past four albums were a little, if not a lot, disappointing? At any rate they’ve all had their moments, but I like you hope there’s more to Zeitgeist.
