Spoon “Kill The Moonlight” (Best of the Decade)

spoon kill moonlight

As a bit of a preface to this post, I will readily admit that Spoon were my favorite band of the 2000’s. While others had individual albums or songs that may have eclipsed some of their work, no band consistently released material over the last 10 years that I have enjoyed as much as the output from Britt Daniel, Jim Eno and the gang. Along with Ghostface Killah (you didn’t see that coming, did you?), every time I saw the band release new material I was confident that it would be something that would find its way into my musical rotation for the following few months. After all of the great albums the band has released the one that finds its way back to my stereo most often is 2002’s Kill the Moonlight. Featuring what is probably Spoon’s biggest “hit” to date (“The Way We Get By”), it also featured some of the most memorable songs Daniel has written. Both “Jonathan Fisk” and “Something To Look Forward To,” feature the funky, stripped down soulful post punk sound that Spoon developed further in the second half of the decade. While I could have easily come up with just as many reasons to nominate 2001’s Girls Can Tell or more full-bodied records such as Gimmie Fiction or Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga, it is Kill the Moonlight that to me best represents the band’s output.

Definitely one of my favorites as well…I think I like Girls Can Tell more though.

Spoon is one of those bands that has gotten really big that I ignored for years then decided about a year ago I should check them out finally and liked it. I’ve really liked all of their output this decade really from what I can tell.

while Girls Can Tell is my favorite Spoon record, Moonlight is still amazing.

the last 2 haven’t been QUITE as amazing, but certainly one of the better bands of the least decade for sure, and thankfully they’ve only gotten better live the last few years.
