The Amherst trio had towers of amps stacked up all over the stage, including one that was pointed directly towards front man J Mascis, in case his monitors weren’t providing him enough of his own guitar sound. And not having enough sound has never really been a problem for the group, and it certainly wasn’t on this evening as the band tore through a fiery 90 minute set that spanned the band’s entire career.

Spoon’s Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga has been heralded as one of the best albums of the year and last week the band performed “The Underdog” on The Late Show with David Letterman. Capitalizing on the CBS Orchestra Britt Daniel and his band mates laid down a fantastic performance giving support to those who claim the album’s superiority.

…and they were partially backed by a dude in a purple jacket! What a lovely performance.

By “fantastic performance” do you mean “affected, semi-out of tune, under rehearsed and precious”? Because I could go with that.
I have never been able to fathom the mathematical equation of Spoon adoration vs actual ability. I have been listening for years. When are we all going to just accept that Britt daniel is sort of just kinda okay? And that all their best songs are just rip offs of other styles? Spoon is like Squeeze with none of the wit.

Haha, I like that – “like Squeeze with none of the wit.” I really enjoyed this performance, more so than I do much of Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga. I wouldn’t go as far as discrediting it as “sort of just kinda okay” though. While I’m not entirely caught up in the hype of the album and it’s no where near my favorites of the year, it’s still pretty solid all-in-all.
