I'm going to go with Neil Young. I love the rawness and fearless way that he expressed himself lyrically, while keeping his muscial personality. I love how he keeps his "folk" sound and his attitude. Even after all of these years he still has the guts to say what is on his mind, whether others want to hear it or not. Some say that it was sloppily put together, you can tell it was rushed. I say that you can hear the passion in his lyrics and how he sings the lyrics. If I had to choose, it would definitely be Neil Young all of the way.

This year I wanted music I could enjoy with out being preached at...or listening to an artist's personal agendas (although I like that type of music in small doses).
My choice for artist who delivered the catchiest and most enjoyable music was....Mr. Tom Petty. He makes it look so easy and sometimes I think he must be reading my mail. You'll find me just singing along with Tom while jetting down the highway.

For my money, I like Tom Petty's new stuff the most this past year. I was also a bit let down by Neil Young. Admittedly, I do not agree with Young's politics, but I usually do enojoy his music. On that note, I thought LwW (the songs I heard from it) sounded hurriedly put together, which they obviously were for relevance sake. I thought the lyrics were less than creative and mostly repetitve. Albeit, the album had a theme and that would naturally lead to some repetitiveness, but I still think the album could have been produced better. I guess maybe I just expect more professionalism from a long-time rocker. In conclusion, Neil Young still rocks, but the quality of LwW lacked in my eyes.

Neil Young was my fav classic rocker of the year, no question. His Living With War record has the kind of raw energy that I always knew he still had in him. If only he could've done a record like this 10 years ago, y'know, after his stint with Pearl Jam.
You don't even have to agree with his politics to like the whole record - it's more amusing than anything else, and patriotic (for a guy born in Canada!).
Can't wait to hear what LwW sounds like when the remixed version comes out later this year.

I'd have to go with Dylan: he's still The American Songwriter.

Though they haven't released anything this year, I think Journey deserves an honorable mention. I've heard that the shows they did this year were pretty incredible. Also, it seems like Don't Stop Believin' has lately become an incredibly popular anthem, but maybe that's just among my friends (or maybe it's always been an incredibly popular anthem, and I'm only just now noticing it).
